City Wonders · Piazza del Popolo, Rome

Civita, Tuscany and Orvieto in one day

A guided coach day from Rome that strings three places together: Civita di Bagnoregio in the morning, a Tuscan farmhouse lunch with five wines, and Orvieto in the afternoon. Pick it because it is the most reviewed Civita trip from Rome and it solves the one hard part, getting to a village with no train.

Civita & Orvieto Day Trip from Rome with Wine Lunch

About this experience

Civita di Bagnoregio has no station and a thin bus service, which is why most visitors from Rome come on a coach. This one is run by City Wonders and leaves Piazza del Popolo at 7:20. The first stop is Civita itself: about two hours with a guide, over the footbridge, through Porta Santa Maria and up to Piazza San Donato. The coach then crosses into Tuscany for a three-course lunch at a farmhouse near Montepulciano (other City Wonders listings name it as Fattoria Il Pulcino) with five wines. The last stop is Orvieto, with about two hours of free time for the striped cathedral and the lanes around it.

The price is low for what it covers. About $107 buys a seat, the guide, lunch and the tasting, while a private driver for the same towns costs about $414 per group and leaves out the food. The trade-off is time on the road: guests report a 12-hour day, many curves on the Tuscan stretch and a wish for more time in Orvieto. None of the listings we checked put the town's €5 Civita ticket on the inclusions list, so carry €5 in cash or have the town's app ready, and ask the guide at check-in.

The walking is real. The bridge is about 300 metres long and steep at the top, with no shade. Hotel pickup and tips are not included, and the tour is not suitable for wheelchairs.

I really wanted to see Bagnoregio the old town on a hill so I joined this trip and in doing so I also got to see Orvieto also a pretty city with its wonderful Church a must see.

I wish there was more time in Orvieto, but I understand that the agenda needed to fit in a reasonable timeframe and 12 hours is already quite a bit of time.

Tips before you book

  • Take a travel-sickness tablet before lunch if curvy roads bother you. Guests mention the bends.
  • Wear shoes with grip. The last stretch of the bridge is steep and the lanes in Civita are uneven stone.
  • Bring a hat and water from May to September. The bridge has no shade.
  • Eat a light breakfast: the lunch is three courses with five glasses.
  • In Orvieto, decide before you arrive. Two hours is enough for the cathedral and a walk, not for the well and a cellar too.
