Booking choice: The Civita and Orvieto day trip, from $107 per person. Check dates Tour details
Rome to Civita is a classic day trip, and also a long one. The village sits in the far north of Lazio, close to the Umbrian border, and the last stretch of every route uses small country roads. Organised tours pair it with Orvieto, Tuscany or Assisi to make the journey worthwhile.
Bus times below come from the COTRAL timetable search for Monday 12, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October 2026; train times and fares from Trenitalia for Wednesday 14 October 2026. Tour details come from the GetYourGuide and Viator listings on 10 October 2026.
The quick answer
A guided coach day trip is the easiest way: $99 to $110, about 12 hours, and roughly two hours in Civita. On your own, take a train to Orvieto (from €10.10, 1 h 15 to 2 h) and the COTRAL bus to Bagnoregio (about 40 minutes, no Sunday service). By car, allow 1 h 45 to 2 h each way.

How far is Civita di Bagnoregio from Rome?
About 120 km, roughly 1 h 45 to 2 h by road. There is no train to Bagnoregio; the nearest stations are Orvieto and Viterbo.
Drivers take the A1 motorway north. The town's directions page gives two exits: Attigliano, about 30 km and 35 minutes from Bagnoregio, which is the natural exit coming from Rome, or Orvieto, 18 km and about 25 minutes away. From either one the last part is on provincial roads through farmland.
By public transport it takes two legs: a train from Rome to Orvieto, then a COTRAL bus from Orvieto station to Bagnoregio. From Bagnoregio you still walk 15 minutes or so (or ride the local shuttle) to the Belvedere, and then cross the bridge. Door to door from central Rome, that is rarely under three hours.
| Route | Time each way | Cost | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coach day trip | About 2 h on the coach | From $99 | Fixed schedule, about 2 h in Civita |
| Car via A1, Attigliano exit | 1 h 45 to 2 h | Fuel, tolls, parking | ZTL rules and busy car parks |
| Train to Orvieto + COTRAL bus | 2.5 to 3.5 h | €11.40 to €16.20 | Few buses, none on Sundays |
| Private driver | 1 h 45 to 2 h | $414 per group | Entry tickets extra |
| Train to Viterbo + COTRAL bus | 3 h or more | Regional train + €2.20 bus | Slow line; last Saturday bus back 13:45 |
Which day trips from Rome go to Civita?
Five are worth comparing: two Tuscany combos, an Assisi and Orvieto marathon, a shorter Villa Lante trip, and a private driver.
The City Wonders Civita and Orvieto day trip is the most reviewed (4.6 from 231 reviews, $107). The coach leaves Piazza del Popolo at 7:20 and returns about 12 hours later. You get around two hours in Civita with the guide, then a farmhouse lunch near Montepulciano with five wines including a Brunello, then free time in Orvieto. Hotel pickup is not included, and a guest, Jenn L, warned in October 2026: "If you get motion sickness, the drive involves many curves."
The Tour Guy's Civita and Tuscany trip ($99, 4.8 from 181) swaps Orvieto for Pienza. It leaves Piazzale Flaminio at 7:30, gives about 1 h 45 in Civita with entry and the shuttle included, then a winery lunch with a pici pasta demonstration and three wines, and an hour in Pienza. The Assisi, Civita and Orvieto tour ($110, 4.7 from 112) runs 14 hours from Tiburtina station. It is the one to pick only if Assisi matters more to you than Civita: Stacy, a guest in October 2025, called the hour at Civita "challenging" and wrote "DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE the unique challenge that this 2nd stop presents."
For a calmer day, the Civita and Villa Lante trip ($134, 5.0 from 44) goes by minivan from Cinecittà metro, visits the Renaissance water garden at Bagnaia, then gives you two to three hours in Civita. Both entry tickets are included and you are back in Rome in about 7.5 hours. Robyn wrote in July 2026: "had plenty of time not rushed anywhere."
| Tour | From | Length | Time in Civita | Also visits | Starts |

Check dates Tour detailsCan you get from Rome to Civita by train and bus?
Yes, on weekdays and Saturdays: a train to Orvieto, then a COTRAL bus. There are no buses on Sundays.
Trains from Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina reach Orvieto in 1 h 15 to about 2 h. Regional trains cost €10.10; Intercity trains, a little faster, cost €13.90 to €14.90 on Trenitalia's site. On the day we checked, some journeys needed a change or a replacement bus, so search your exact date.
The COTRAL bus leaves from the forecourt of Orvieto station (Orvieto Scalo) and takes 30 to 50 minutes to Bagnoregio. On Monday 12 October 2026 it ran at 06:29, 07:34, 07:59, 08:39, 13:14, 14:08, 15:53, 17:48 and 18:33. Useful buses back from Bagnoregio included 10:00, 12:30, 13:00, 14:00, 14:40, 16:00 and 17:30. Saturday is similar but thinner. Sunday 18 October had no service at all. Cotral's fare tool quotes €1.30 a ride; buy before boarding, from the bar or tobacconist at the station or in the Cotral app.
The plan that works: an early train that reaches Orvieto by about 8:15, the 08:39 bus, around four hours in Bagnoregio and Civita, the 14:00 or 16:00 bus back, and an evening train to Rome. Miss the 17:30 and the alternative is a taxi; travellers report €50 to €60 from Orvieto. The getting there guide has the full timetable and the Viterbo route.
| Step | Example (weekday, October 2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Train Roma Termini to Orvieto | 06:45, arrives 08:17 | €10.10 regional; check works on the line |
| COTRAL bus Orvieto station to Bagnoregio | 08:39, about 30 min | €1.30; buy before boarding |
| Walk or shuttle to the Belvedere, cross the bridge | About 30 min | €5 ticket, €1 shuttle |
| Civita and Bagnoregio | About 3.5 to 4 h | Lunch in Civita or Bagnoregio |
| COTRAL bus Bagnoregio to Orvieto station | 14:00 or 16:00 | Last bus 17:30; none on Sundays |
| Train back to Rome | Hourly or so in the afternoon | Allow time in Orvieto if you like |
Is it worth driving from Rome?
Yes, if you want Civita early or late without a group. Allow two hours each way and arrive before 10:00.
A car gives you the one thing tours cannot: the village before the coaches or after they leave. The ticket check stops at 20:00, and an evening walk across the bridge is the best part of a visit. The drive is easy motorway until the A1 exit, then winding country roads.
Parking is paid and fills early on weekends. Piazzale Battaglini at the entrance to Bagnoregio is the large one, with a €1 shuttle to the Belvedere; the lots near the Belvedere are closer, smaller and often full. Campervans must use Piazzale Battaglini. Prices vary by car park and by source, from about €1.50 an hour to €5 or €6 for the day, so read the meter. The getting there guide lists them.
With a car, Orvieto is half an hour away, and the cellar under its cathedral square, the Orvieto tufa cellar tasting ($34), fills an hour well. If you have not driven in Italy, read up on the ZTL limited-traffic zones first; old town centres, Bagnoregio included at busy times, are camera-controlled.
Is a private driver from Rome worth $414?
For three or more people who want their own pace, yes. Remember the price is per group and excludes entry tickets and guides.
Best Rome Driver's private tour (5.0 from 163 reviews) picks you up at your hotel at about 8:00 in a Mercedes minivan with an English-speaking driver, gives about 1 h 30 in Civita, then drives to Orvieto and St Patrick's Well. It lasts about eight hours. The listing contradicts itself on tickets and guides; the itinerary says admission is not included, so treat it as a driver and budget €5 a head for Civita plus the well and any guide.
The value is in the flexibility. Claudine M wrote in August 2026: "Our driver Alex Paolini helped us move our visiting time 1 hour earlier to avoid the summer heat." For a family of four, $414 against four coach seats at $107 to $110 is not far off once you count the hotel pickup and the shorter day.
For one or two people, a coach trip is better value. For a group with a slow walker, the private car wins, because the driver can drop you at the closest legal point to the Belvedere.
Your own driver from your Rome hotel to Civita and Orvieto, leaving when you want. Price per group.
Check datesHow much time do you get in Civita on a day trip?
About two hours on most tours, under an hour on the Assisi marathon, and as long as you like with a car.
Two hours is enough to cross the bridge, see Piazza San Donato, walk to the end of the village and back, and have a coffee. It is not enough to sit through lunch inside Civita and see the geology museum. Most coach trips plan lunch elsewhere for that reason.
Patricia B, on the City Wonders trip in September 2026, put the trade-off honestly: "I wish there was more time in Orvieto, but I understand that the agenda needed to fit in a reasonable timeframe and 12 hours is already quite a bit of time." Our pick for a first visit with no car is the City Wonders day trip or the Tour Guy trip. For a shorter, calmer day, the Villa Lante trip. The what to see guide helps you plan two hours on the rock.
