Bagnoregio is a small town on the northern edge of Lazio, between Orvieto in Umbria and Viterbo, the provincial capital. Civita is the separate rock at its eastern edge. You arrive in Bagnoregio, walk through its old centre to the Belvedere viewpoint, and see Civita across the valley with the bridge running up to it.
Bus times come from the COTRAL timetable search for Monday 12, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October 2026. Road and parking details come from the town's how to arrive page and several local sources, which disagree on parking prices; we give ranges.
The quick answer
By public transport, take a train to Orvieto, then the COTRAL bus from the station to Bagnoregio (30 to 50 minutes, €1.30, about nine runs on weekdays, none on Sundays). By car, leave the A1 at Orvieto (18 km) or Attigliano (30 km) and park at Piazzale Battaglini, then walk 15 minutes or take the €1 shuttle to the Belvedere.

Where is Civita di Bagnoregio, and where do you actually arrive?
In the province of Viterbo in northern Lazio, about 20 km from Orvieto. You arrive in Bagnoregio and cross to Civita on foot.
Think of the trip in three pieces. First, reach the town of Bagnoregio, by bus, car or tour. Second, get from the edge of town to the Belvedere viewpoint and the ticket office near the bridge: a walk of about 15 minutes from Piazzale Battaglini, or the shuttle. Third, cross the bridge, about 300 metres long, on foot.
Two place names matter. Piazzale Battaglini is the large square and car park at the entrance to Bagnoregio, with a ticket office on busy days and the shuttle stop. Piazza Alberto Ricci and the Belvedere are at the far end of town, where Civita comes into view and where the GetYourGuide ticket and private walking tour meet.

How do you get from Orvieto to Bagnoregio by bus?
Take the COTRAL bus from Orvieto railway station. It runs about nine times on weekdays, eight on Saturdays and not at all on Sundays.
The bus starts at Piazza d'Armi in Orvieto's upper town and calls at the railway station (Orvieto Scalo) a few minutes later, so train travellers board in the station forecourt. The ride to Bagnoregio takes 30 to 50 minutes depending on the run. Cotral's fare tool quotes €1.30 for the trip. Buy tickets before you board, at the station bar or tobacconist or in the Cotral app.
The timetable follows the school year, which explains the early and mid-afternoon clusters. On Sunday 18 October 2026 the search returned nothing in either direction, and that is the normal pattern. On weekdays in school holidays some runs may drop, so search your exact date on cotralspa.it the day before.
Buses stop along the main road into Bagnoregio (the timetable names stops such as Ist. Agrario F.lli Agosti and Ist. Superiore). From the town it is a walk of 15 to 25 minutes through the old centre to the Belvedere. The last bus back leaves Bagnoregio at 17:30 on weekdays and 17:25 on Saturdays. Miss it and you need a taxi.

Can you get there from Viterbo?
Yes, by COTRAL bus from the Riello bus station: about a dozen runs on weekdays, 40 to 50 minutes, €2.20.
Viterbo is the better base for the south of the province: the Villa Lante garden at Bagnaia, the Monster Park at Bomarzo and Lake Bolsena are all close. Buses to Bagnoregio leave from Viterbo Riello. On Monday 12 October 2026 they ran at 06:10, 07:25, 08:15, 09:00, 10:50, 12:10, 13:10, 13:55, 17:30 and 18:10, with a few slower runs between; the trip takes about 40 to 45 minutes and Cotral quotes €2.20.
The return is the trap. Weekday buses from Bagnoregio to Viterbo ran until 18:40, but on Saturday the last one left at 13:45. Sunday had none. If you are coming from Rome by train, Orvieto is quicker than Viterbo: the Rome to Viterbo line is slow, and the Orvieto bus runs later on Saturdays.
| Route | Weekdays | Saturday | Sunday | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Viterbo Riello to Bagnoregio | About 12 runs, 06:10 to 18:10 | About 11 runs, 06:10 to 18:10 | None | €2.20 |
| Bagnoregio to Viterbo Riello | Until 18:40 | Last at 13:45 | None | €2.20 |
| Orvieto station to Bagnoregio | 9 runs, 06:29 to 18:33 | 8 runs, 06:30 to 18:30 | None | €1.30 |
| Bagnoregio to Orvieto station | Until 17:30 | Until 17:25 | None | €1.30 |
How do you drive to Civita, and where do you park?
Leave the A1 at Orvieto from the north or Attigliano from the south, and park at Piazzale Battaglini unless you arrive early enough for the Belvedere lots.
The town's directions are clear. From the north (Florence), leave the A1 at Orvieto: Bagnoregio is about 18 km, 25 minutes. From the south (Rome), leave at Attigliano: about 30 km, 35 minutes, on the SP 19 and SP 5 through Castiglione in Teverina. Follow the signs for Civita and the yellow parking signs.
Parking prices are the most confused fact about Civita, because each car park sets its own and sources copy old figures. In 2025 and 2026 sources give Piazzale Battaglini at about €1.50 an hour or €5 a day, the lots by Piazza Alberto Ricci and the Belvedere at about €2 an hour, and the small paid lot below the bridge at €2 for the first hour, €1 for each extra hour, €6 a day. Read the meter before you leave the car.
Campervans cannot reach the bridge car parks and must use Piazzale Battaglini or the area on the Viterbo side before the cemetery. Coaches park at Piazzale Bersaglieri (€40 a day) and may only stop at Piazzale Battaglini to drop off. On summer weekends the lots near the Belvedere fill by mid-morning, and the town can close the centre to traffic.
| Car park | Typical price (sources vary) | Walk to the bridge | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Piazzale Battaglini | About €1.50 an hour or €5 a day | About 15 to 25 min, or €1 shuttle | Biggest; ticket office on busy days; campervans |
| Piazza Alberto Ricci / Belvedere | About €2 an hour | A few minutes | Small, full early in high season |
| Lot below the bridge (SP Bagnorese) | €2 first hour, €1 after, €6 a day | Shortest | Very few spaces |
| Piazzale Bersaglieri | €40 a day | Shuttle | Coaches only |
How do you get from Bagnoregio to the bridge?
Walk about 15 minutes through the old town from Piazzale Battaglini, or ride the €1 shuttle to the Belvedere.
The local shuttle, run by Italviaggi, goes from Piazzale Battaglini to Piazza Alberto Ricci and the Belvedere and back. You pay on board; sources put it at €1 a ride. It runs every 10 to 15 minutes on busy holidays and less often on weekdays, according to visitors, and the timetable is on the operator's site linked from the town's directions page.
Walking is the better choice if you can. The route runs along Bagnoregio's main street, past the churches and the cafés, to the viewpoint where Civita appears all at once. From the Belvedere the path drops down to the foot of the bridge, then the bridge climbs, gently at first and steeply in its last stretch, to the Porta Santa Maria. Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the bridge. The bridge guide covers the climb.
| Leg | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Piazzale Battaglini to the Belvedere, on foot | About 15 min | Free |
| Piazzale Battaglini to the Belvedere, shuttle | A few minutes plus the wait | About €1 |
| Bus stop in Bagnoregio to the Belvedere | 15 to 25 min | Free |
| Belvedere down to the ticket check | About 5 min | €5 entry |
| Footbridge up to Porta Santa Maria | 10 to 15 min | Included |
What if the bus does not fit your day?
Take a taxi from Orvieto, book a private driver, or join a tour that does the logistics for you.
Taxis wait at Orvieto station; travellers report about €50 to €60 one way to Bagnoregio. Agree the price and a pickup time before you set off, because there is no taxi rank in Bagnoregio. For a group, that is close to the cost of a small-group tour.
From Rome, the private driver ($414 per group) solves everything except the walk. From the Civitavecchia cruise port, the shore tour ($241) pairs Civita with the Bomarzo Monster Park and includes both entries and lunch. From Rome on a budget, the Civita and Tuscany day trip ($99) includes the shuttle in Bagnoregio, which takes the flat part out of the walk.

A private minivan and driver from your Rome hotel to Civita and Orvieto. Price per group; entry tickets extra.
