Assisi, Civita and Orvieto, three towns

A 14-hour coach day from Rome Tiburtina that adds St Francis's Assisi to Civita and Orvieto. Book it only if those three towns matter more to you than time in any one of them.

Assisi, Civita di Bagnoregio & Orvieto Day Tour

About this experience

Three hill towns in one day is a lot, and this tour does not pretend otherwise. Amigo Tours runs a coach from Piazzale della Stazione Tiburtina with a tour leader, usually in English and Spanish. The listed plan is Assisi first (a visit plus free time for lunch), then Civita di Bagnoregio, then Orvieto, and back to Tiburtina 14 hours after leaving. The text on the same listing says Civita comes last, so the order can change on the day.

The price is the draw. About $110 gets you three towns that are hard to link by public transport, and Assisi alone is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Rome. The cost is time on the ground. The itinerary gives Civita a short visit plus about an hour of free time, and guests report around an hour to cross the bridge, see the village and walk back. One guest found that hard going; another wanted more than an hour and a quarter in Orvieto.

Meals and the entry fees are extra. That means the €5 Civita ticket and any paid sight in Orvieto. The Basilica of St Francis is free to enter, but guests report being turned away on crowded pilgrimage days. The listing warns of significant uphill walking and rules out people with a low level of fitness.

  • The Basilica of St Francis and the medieval lanes of Assisi
  • Civita di Bagnoregio and its footbridge over the calanchi
  • Orvieto's Gothic cathedral on its volcanic cliff
  • A tour leader who handles timing between three towns
  • One of the cheapest ways to see Assisi and Civita from Rome

Fantastic tour with Amigo Tours! Our guide Serena was excellent, very knowledgeable and organized, and Filipo was a great driver. The day ran smoothly with plenty of detail and no unnecessary gift shop stops, which I really appreciated. All three destinations, Assisi, Civita di Bagnoregio, and Orvieto, were beautiful. Just note that the walk into Civita is steep, so it may be challenging for those with mobility issues. Highly recommend this tour!

Tips before you book

  • Buy the Civita ticket in the town's free app before the day. With about an hour in the village, a queue at the ticket office hurts.
  • Pack a snack and water. Lunch is in Assisi and the next chance to eat properly is late afternoon.
  • Dress for the basilica in Assisi: shoulders and knees covered.
  • Take the bridge at your own pace and turn back on time. The coach will not wait long.
