Booking choice: The Civita and Orvieto day trip, from $107 per person. Check dates Tour details
Autumn and winter are the quiet half of Civita's year. The summer weekend queues on the footbridge are gone, the valley fills with fog on cold mornings, and the village goes back to its dozen or so residents and their cats. The entry ticket stays at €5 all year, paid to the town online or at the ticket office.
The catch is logistics. Daylight ends before five in December, the COTRAL bus from Orvieto does not run on Sundays or public holidays, and Orvieto's funicular has been shut since June. None of that should stop you. It should change how you plan the day.
The quick answer
Civita is open every day through autumn and winter, and the entry ticket stays €5. The main dates are the Bagnoregio cellar festival (9 to 11 October 2026), the living nativity in the village between late December and 6 January (2026-27 dates not yet published) and Umbria Jazz Winter in Orvieto (30 December 2026 to 3 January 2027). Plan around short days and the bus: COTRAL runs Monday to Saturday only, with nothing on Sundays, on 8 December, 25 and 26 December, 1 January or 6 January.
What is on at Civita and Bagnoregio from October 2026 to March 2027?
A cellar festival in October, the living nativity over Christmas and New Year, and a jazz festival in Orvieto; the rest of the season is quiet.
The first date is already here. The twelfth Festa delle Cantine, "Profumi d'Autunno", runs from 9 to 11 October 2026 in the old centre of Bagnoregio, the town on the near side of the bridge. The cellars open from 18:00 each evening, with a lunch from 12:30 on the Saturday and Sunday and bands in Piazza Cavour and Piazza Porta di Valle, according to the programme published by Tusciaweb. It happens in Bagnoregio, not in Civita, so you can see the village by day and drink by night.
The big event is the living nativity, staged in Civita's lanes over the Christmas holidays. The organisers had not published the 2026-27 dates on 10 October 2026, and the town's own events page still shows the last edition. We cover past dates and how to plan for it in our living nativity post.
Half an hour away, Orvieto hosts the 33rd Umbria Jazz Winter from 30 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, as the festival announces. Hotels in Orvieto fill early for those nights. After that the calendar is empty until spring, and the next Palio della Tonna, the donkey race in Civita's square, falls on the first Sunday of June, which is 6 June 2027.
| Date | What | Where | Status |

| Late December to 6 January | Living nativity (presepe vivente) | Civita | 2026-27 dates not published |
| 30 Dec 2026 to 3 Jan 2027 | Umbria Jazz Winter, 33rd edition | Orvieto | Confirmed, programme to come |
| 1 January 2027 | Orvieto cathedral closed all day | Orvieto | Announced by the Duomo |
| 6 June 2027 | Palio della Tonna (first Sunday of June) | Civita, Piazza San Donato | Traditional date |
How short are the days, and when is the fog best?
Sunset falls from about 18:30 in mid-October to about 16:40 in mid-December, so a winter visit should start by late morning at the latest.
Clocks in Italy go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, and the light drops off a cliff after that. Around the winter solstice the sun sets at about 16:40 at Bagnoregio, and the lanes inside Civita are in shade well before then. A day trip that reaches the village at 15:00 in December gets an hour of usable light.
The fog is the reason many photographers come in this season. On cold, still mornings after a clear night the Valle dei Calanchi fills with cloud and Civita sits above it like an island. It needs an early start and a bit of luck: by late morning the sun usually burns it off. Rain is the other side of winter here. In January 2026 Bagnoregio had about a third of its average annual rainfall in one month, the town and its geologists said in a February statement. Wet tuff steps and the bridge's slope are slippery, and shoes with grip matter more than in summer.
| Mid-month | Sunset at Bagnoregio (approx.) | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| October (before 25 Oct) | 18:30 | Long afternoons, the best month for light |
| November | 16:50 | Arrive by 13:00 for a relaxed visit |
| December | 16:40 | Shortest days; lanes in shade by mid-afternoon |
| January | 17:00 | Cold mornings, best odds of valley fog |
| February | 17:40 | Days lengthen; still quiet on weekdays |
| March | 18:15 | Spring crowds start at weekends |

Can you still reach Civita by bus in winter?
Yes, from Monday to Saturday, but there is no COTRAL bus on Sundays or public holidays, and five of those holidays fall in the next three months.
The COTRAL bus from Orvieto railway station to Bagnoregio is the only public transport, and it is a school and commuter service first. The COTRAL journey planner lists about ten weekday departures and eight on Saturdays, and none on Sundays and holidays. That rules out the bus for Christmas Day, Santo Stefano and New Year's Day, which are also the evenings of the nativity. Full times are in our Orvieto and Civita in one day post.
Orvieto has its own problem this winter. The funicular from the station up to the old town has been closed since 9 June 2026, and the comune said in July that further ministerial approvals and checks were needed before a reopening date could be set. A replacement shuttle bus runs between Piazza Matteotti, by the station, and Piazza Cahen at the top. Local press was still reporting it out of service at the end of September. It adds a few minutes, not a crisis, but allow for it when you chase a train.
| Public holiday | Day in 2026-27 | COTRAL bus to Bagnoregio |
|---|---|---|
| All Saints | Sunday 1 November 2026 | No service |
| Immaculate Conception | Tuesday 8 December 2026 | No service |
| Christmas Day | Friday 25 December 2026 | No service |
| Santo Stefano | Saturday 26 December 2026 | No service |
| New Year's Day | Friday 1 January 2027 | No service |
| Epiphany | Wednesday 6 January 2027 | No service |
Is a Rome day trip a good idea in winter?
Yes, if you accept that the day is mostly in the coach; on short days a private driver who leaves early gets you more light in Civita.
The Civita and Orvieto coach day trip is a 12-hour day with about two hours in Civita, a farmhouse lunch with five wines near Montepulciano and free time in Orvieto. In summer the timing suits everyone. In December the Orvieto stop happens close to dusk, and guests already report wishing they had more time there. One recent reviewer, Jenn L, adds that "the drive involves many curves", which is worth knowing if you get car sick.
A private driver from your Rome hotel fixes the light problem because you choose the start. The price is per group, about $414, and excludes the €5 entry and any guide. For two people that is expensive. For four or five it gets close to the coach, and you can be on the bridge by 10:30.

Coach from Rome with a guide, about two hours in Civita, a farmhouse lunch and Orvieto. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which helps with winter weather.
Check dates Tour detailsWhat should you plan for on a winter visit?
Grip, layers, and the right ticket office: the Piazzale Battaglini office opens only on busy days.
The footbridge is about 300 metres long and exposed to the wind from the valley, and the last stretch is steep. In winter that walk is colder than people expect, and the lanes inside are uneven stone that stays damp in the shade. Our bridge guide has the details for anyone with limited mobility.
The town sells the €5 ticket at two offices. The one at Piazzale Battaglini, by the big car park, opens on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays; on other days only the Mercatello office near the bridge is open, per the official ticket page. Buying online first saves the question. Cafes and restaurants inside Civita keep shorter hours in low season, and some close on weekdays, so carry water and a snack. Weekdays outside the holidays are the quietest days of the whole year. That is the real reward for coming now.
